  • 9:00 AM Gatering at Starbucks: 110 Donahue St., Ste A, Marin City

    9:45 AM Start the engines

Note: Make sure you have a full tank of gas before leaving your place, make room for the cyclists when passing, and turn on the headlights for the duration of the drive!

This drive will showcase spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco, as well as the entire Bay panorama, while driving through the lush and beautiful Marin County backroads. Approximately 2 ½ hour drive, a little over 50 miles. This will be on some of the most twisty roads you will ever find; Dramamine will come in handy if you are prone to carsickness!

FIRST PORTION: MARIN CITY TO MARIN HEADLANDS: After our meetup at Starbucks in Marin City we will wend our way through picturesque (and touristy) Sausalito, up the hill to Marin Headlands Park. There we will have picture-postcard views of the GG Bridge and SF; though there are parking turnouts, they tend to be packed full so we may just drive slowly to enjoy the views. Retracing our steps back to Hwy 101 North, we get onto CA Hwy 1 through Mill Valley, and on to Mt. Tamalpais State Park.

SECOND PORTION: MARIN HEADLANDS TO MT. TAM: We will be on Shoreline Highway (CA 1) and continue on various winding roads until the Rock Springs Parking lot on the mountain. There are porta-potties there; and although the lot is large it tends to fill up early, so we suggest going on to E. Ridgecrest Drive which will take us to the East Peak Observation lot, only about 12 min. farther; there is a fee lot ($7 or 8 per car), but best panoramic views of the Bay, and real bathrooms.

THIRD PORTION: MT. TAM TO PT. REYES STATION: We backtrack to the Rock Springs Parking lot, and from there descend down the old Fairfax-Bolinas Road, through some incredibly untouched scenery. (The road is quite tortuous, down to one-lane in parts, and may be slow due to cars and cyclists.) When we hit CA 1 again, we follow it north a few miles through Olema to Pt. Reyes Station, our final destination. There we hope to all lunch at Cafe Reyes, which has plenty of seating outside and inside; however limited staffing may make for some delays. (But one can order drinks at the host window and sip while you wait.) AND after lunch, for those that don't wish to go straightaway home, there are many opportunities to explore nearby attractions such as Point Reyes National Seashore, Drakes Beach, Bear Valley Earthquake Walk, etc

  • From the organizer, Bill Brandt:

The First Sunday Drive on February 6, 2022 will take us from Auburn to Grass Valley, California.

    Meeting Place

We'll meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Chevron Station and Starbucks facility at 10021 Combie Road in Auburn, CA 95602.

As you are driving up Highway 49, be aware that this intersection will sneak up on you. You will see a sign pointing to the left – Wolf Road and to the right – Combie Road. It’s a good 10-15 minutes up from Auburn.

    Restaurant Destination

    Wild Eye Pub

    535 Mill Street, Grass Valley

This is a drive I had done in the past with a twist – a new restaurant in Grass Valley. As I discovered, during these times finding a restaurant that is open during our hours, with parking, is a challenge. But this is a gem.

We’ll stop at Bridgeport, to see a covered bridge. I know that it holds some record for length, but don’t know the details. A passer-by told me that it is the “longest in the world” but I’m not sure about that – there are plenty in New England. The state of CA just refurbished it.

It was built in 1862 as a means of greatly reducing transit times across the south fork of the Yuba River. Please have $5 with you as it is a state park and they ask that you pay on the honor system.

Since the Restaurant doesn’t open until 1:00 we’ll stay here 30-45 minutes. There are several exhibits to keep you occupied.

This has been a favorite drive of mine -as we leave Bridgeport and go through the booming metropolis of French Corral, notice the Wells Fargo stage stop that looks like they just closed yesterday.

Shortly after French Corral we hit the intersection of Hwy 49. While we won’t be stopping at the following 2 destinations I’ll mention, you may want to either backtrack after lunch or make it on another trip. To the left on 49, up another 30 miles, is the picture postcard town of Downieville. We’ll be turning towards the right and Grass Valley. But along the way, you will see a turn-off for the Malakoff Diggins. I’ve thought of leading a drive here, but as I recall, there are some dirt roads, which has always been a deal breaker for a FSD. It takes a good 30-45 minutes just to get to the recreated company mining town of Brookfield. And another 30-45 minutes to get back to Nevada City.  But it is the site of a mining town that was historic for being the first Environmental Court Cases. It was the miners vs the ranchers in 1884, and the ranchers were objecting to the polluted streams caused by the miners hydraulic mining. As you drive in there, you can see the remnants of all that hydraulic mining. And because of COVID, all of the historic buildings are closed.

But these 2 places are something to think about later on your own

After a lot of searching, I found a restaurant that is open during the hours we need, and has ambiance. I told the owner, Beth, that if I lived in Grass Valley I would become a regular. A number of car clubs meet there. There should be plenty of parking in the back.

Beth is a former Special Eds teacher and now pub owner and bartender. She also takes out the trash in the evenings as owners do these days!

Finally, a few rules. Beth asks us to wear a mask going in, but once you sit down you can take it off.

When we are caravanning, please keep a reasonable tight group. If you are ¼ mile behind the car in front of you, you are possibly losing the route for yourself and those behind you, and you are letting all of those pesky Hyundais and pick up trucks get in between our smart Mercedes caravan.

    Please keep it tight!

We leave, as usual, at 10AM. I found, from the Greenhaven area of South Sacramento, to allow an hour’s transit time to the meeting place.

    See you February 6!

I often dropped by and visited them because I have a coffee meet with my swimming teammates after an early morning workout within the same plaza.

I have asked them if it is ok for our Mercedes-Benz club members to drive their vintages and classics, and share the auto-enthusiasm on February 26, and they are all delighted and looking forward to it.

  • The Mercedes-Benz of El Dorado Hills dealership will host MBCA Section members for an exlusive look at the new EQS all electric sedan on Sunday, February 27th at 10:30 a.m.  The presentation should last approximately one half hour, after which interested attendees can head over for brunch at one of several El Dorado Hills Town Center dining establishments.

    From Mercedes-Benz:

Redefining the automobile once again, Mercedes-EQ launches the all-electric 2022 EQS Sedan.  Designed to exceed all expectations, the completely new EQS from Mercedes-EQ is the first-of-its-kind fully electric luxury vehicle. While the EQS is a close relative to the new S-Class, the electric architecture is all its own. This sedan marks a major milestone in integrating progressive mobility with executive-class luxury.

Seductively sculpted, the EQS is one of the world’s most aerodynamic production vehicle available today. Upon approach, you’ll notice the ultra-sleek exterior with an LED lightband that stretches across the entire front grille, giving you a taste of the captivating beauty that lies within. The automatic comfort doors open and close…automatically, of course. The beautiful design extends seamlessly inside the sleek interior, revealing the available Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) Hyperscreen. Exclusive to the EQS, this 56" curved glass instrument panel stretches from door to door to seamlessly merge three screens. A zero-layer interface eliminates the need to scroll submenus or provide voice commands, as the most essential applications — charging, entertainment, phone, navigation, connectivity, massage and more — are available given the situation. Each seat offers an opportunity to interact with the vehicle for a unique experience for both driver and passengers alike. The heart of the EQS beats with the next generation lithium-ion battery, a sophisticated, high-energy density that sets a benchmark in performance, efficiency and charging capacity. The integrated navigation uses Electric Intelligence to calculate your route while taking into account charging stops, weather conditions and topography — helping to ensure your journey flows as smoothly as the EQS itself.1 With easy charging opportunities in the densest network of charge points, the EQS can get a quick boost in just 15 minutes. And unlike traditional gas-powered engines, the EQS electric engine has its own soundscape, designed to uniquely carve out space for tranquility within the cabin.

The underground exhibit, dubbed Wunderground, has displayed Porsches owned by Adam Carolla, Jerry Seinfeld, and most recently Rod Emory and Cameron Healey's 1951 Porsche 356 SL Gmünd Coupe.

It looks exactly like Porsche Santa Clarita cut a sliver right out of Porsche’s own museum in Stuttgart, transported it halfway around the world, and plopped it in the basement. It’s incredible how the Wunderground has managed to capture the aesthetics of the Porsche Museum so perfectly. It’s not huge, housing just over a dozen cars at any given time, but they’re all incredible pieces of Porsche history in their own right.

  • The Greater Washington Section of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America (GWS-MBCA; http://gws.mbca.org/) is pleased to announce the 2022 Deutsche Marque Concours d'Elegance!

The Deutsche Marque Concours event is an ideal opportunity for GWS-MBCA members to join their BMW Car Club of America and Porsche Club of America friends in a celebration of our German marques.

After such positive feedback, we will return to OCCOQUAN REGIONAL PARK for its ideal setting and accommodation for our members. The park is situated between Interstate 95 South at Exit 160 (123 North/Occoquan/Lake Ridge) and the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia with beautiful Occoquan River views! Plus, the park's own food truck will be selling lunch by the main Pavilion building. Alternatively, you may also enjoy the park's on-site restaurant, Brickmakers Cafe, if you don't mind a long walk (or a super short drive in your non-Concours automobile, of course!) that day.

Now celebrating 38 years, some changes implemented in years past remain in order. Chiefly, GWS-MBCA members must register for this event via Motorsportreg.com (http://www.motorsportreg.com/).

If you are unfamiliar with this registration process, please review the following helpful hints:

    1. Register your username and password on Motorsportreg.com.

    2. Review this GWS-MBCA DMCdE announcement page.

    3. Scroll down and click on the green "Continue" button.

    4. A new page will open to select an entry type. Be sure to click the radio button next to the quantity drop-down box to expand the vehicle and class fields.

    5. You may purchase additional Awards Reception tickets on this page, too.

In the Deutsche Marque Concours d'Elegance, vehicles are judged by their condition, appearance, and cleanliness. Competitive Mercedes-Benz vehicles are divided into two classes:

"Concours Street" Class – Judges scoring cars in this class will follow MBCA National Concours Rules in which the Interior, Trunk, Soft Top, Chrome, Rubber, Glass, Lights, Engine Compartment, Exterior Paint, and Body Work (but not the Chassis/Underbody/Exhaust System) are assessed. On the day of the show, these cars will be divided into categories based on actual turnout.

"Concours Popular Vote" Class – Public ballot will determine the “People's Choice” award.

The "Spirit of the Deutsche Marque Concours Award" will be announced and presented as the finale to the Awards Reception. Jointly, the three local Concours Chairs from BMWCCA, PCA, and MBCA will choose one car from their Best of Marque recipients to receive this large and impressive award.

Also returning to the event lawn will be another multi-make "Car Corral" display area adjacent to the Concours lawn. The Car Corral remains free of charge and is open to the public to display any non-judged automobile. Space will be limited, but, because usually there are many interesting cars that end up hidden in the parking lot somewhere, the Car Corral will exist simply to highlight the level of automotive enthusiasm that makes an event like the Deutsche Marque Concours so popular year after year!

The Deutsche Marque Concours d'Elegance remains free of charge to spectators and the Concours entry fee will be $50 per car. Each Concours entry fee includes one Wine & Cheese Awards Reception ticket. Additional Reception tickets can be purchased for $25 each.

Please understand that in order to maintain fairness in judging, you must have your car both registered and in position on the lawn well before judging starts at 10:30 a.m., preferably by 10:00 a.m. If your car is selected for an award, the announcement will be made at the 3:00 p.m. Awards Reception. Please be present at the Awards Reception to receive it, otherwise, it must be awarded to the runner-up in attendance at the Reception.

To ensure this event runs smoothly, we invite you to volunteer your time!

Volunteer opportunities include guiding entrants to lawn parking spots, handing out registration materials, participating as a Concours Judge, and helping to leave the facilities as we found them. Your input is very much needed and appreciated!

To great disappointment, the College Automotive Restoration Students (C.A.R.S. Club) annual car show at McPherson College has either been closed to the public or cancelled for the last two years, so we’re extra ready for this one to return.

If you like anything with wheels, this is your show. There’s something for everyone, which draws hundreds of cars from surrounding states, and it’s wonderfully organized by students enrolled in the Automotive Restoration Program at McPherson. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to see their current projects in progress, as we have in past years.

The Wichita Section has designated this as an MBCA regional event and will be hosting a BBQ lunch buffet for fellow MBCA members. So save Saturday, May 7 in your calendar and be ready to either display your car or just enjoy the show as a spectator. We’ll have additional details as May draws closer.
