  • Delta Drive IV – April 2021

April 18th - 2021 The Fourth Annual “Delta Drive” to the Grand Island Mansion (“GIM”).  This year, due to Covid-19 disruptions the drive is rescheduled to April 18th.

Some important changes as things have changed.  We have moved the starting time back to fit the GIM reservation timing of 12:30 p.m.  The brunch menu has been replaced with a “fixed” menu* ordered and served at your table, the price remains the same @ $39.95/person.  Reservations are required as in the past, they are on a first come basis.  When making your reservations (916.775.1705) please make note that you are with the Mercedes Benz Car Club as they will seat us together.  Please make your reservation as soon as possible!  Please wear your MBZ club name tags to help the staff recognize you are a MBZ’r!

The starting line begins at Peet’s Coffee in Concord. (Please print these instructions out)

We’ll meet up at Peet’s Coffee in the “Clayton Valley Shopping Center” at the intersection of Clayton Valley and Ignacio Valley Roads in Concord from 9:45 a.m. to 10:15 for coffee and snacks. Peet’s is located behind the Bank of America on the corner at 5458 Clayton Valley Road, Concord.  Sign ins, NOTE: please print out these driving instructions, sign ins are to completed by 10:25 a.m.; ladies and gentlemen… “start your engines” …  for a prompt departure at 10:30 a.m. and then a right turn east onto Clayton Valley Road.   That would be “RIGHT” Jack!

We then get on Marsh Creek Road passing by the historic city of Clayton and then into the wilds of the northeast side of Mt. Diablo.  Expect great views and possibly lush green grass covered hills as we wind down the road towards the Delta.  Note, there are warning signs posted regarding the possibility of “ICEY” road conditions.

There is a lot of early California packed into this area, as John Marsh was the first “Anglo” landowner in “Alta California” (2).  We are driving thru history!   About 11 miles down Marsh Creek Road, we’ll make a left turn on to Deer Valley Road headed towards Antioch and a right turn onto Hwy 4 (9 miles) then onto the gateway to “The Delta” Hwy 160, staying to the right.  Next is “The High Bridge”, which is a “toll bridge”, if you don’t have “Fastrak”, have dollars ready!  The plan is to go thru the “collection side” to keep our run together, a beep = $!

Just past Isleton, we follow Hwy 160 over the old bridge and a right turn following Hwy 160.  Next is a left turn on to Hwy 220 just past the Ryde Hotel in Walnut Grove. This is where the driving gets little more interesting as we drive across Grand Island with farm vistas!  Take a right turn on to “Grand Island Road” heading North East. (Note, “The Grand Island Road” is a “loop” around the perimeter of the Island, cannot get lost!)

A short distance on this levee road is our destination on the right … The Grand Island Mansion (“GIM”) 13415 Grand Island Road!  The Finish Line ends at “GIM”!

Parking on the right in the back or on the street in front of the Mansion.

Many of us have already been vaccinated or will soon be meaning we can finally start enjoying our Bluegrass Stars events again!

Let's kick off 2021 this April 24th with lunch at the Key West Shrimp House in Madison Indiana. We lunched there in 2019 and 2020 and comments were, "Lets come here again."

April 24th is a Saturday, a typically busy day for Key West and unfortunately, they do not accept reservations. Amanda at Key West suggested we arrive at 11:30am to get window seating in the room next to the bar before other diners start streaming in. This is the area we had for our other lunches. She also said we need to let her know a couple of days ahead of time how many of us will be there to ensure they have adequate wait staff for us..

The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort (www.KingandPrince.com) is situated among Georgia’s fabled Golden Isles, and rich in history, relaxed charm, and natural beauty, making it the perfect spot to enjoy the views overlooking pristine beaches, Jekyll Island, and the Atlantic Ocean!

It is located approximately halfway between Savannah, GA and Jacksonville, FL. The resort is surrounded by countless recreational activities, historic sites, and attractions that offer something for everyone!

We’ll plan to dine outdoors, on the open-air terrace at their restaurant ECHO. (www.EchoStSimons.com). Naval Air Station St. Simons was an important installation during World War II. Radar was a new technology, a critical advantage for the allies and a top priority for the base’s mission. ECHO is the former location for officers’ quarters, classrooms and towers using to amplify the signal during the War. The name ‘ECHO’ comes from the island’s naval history. As radar sent its electromagnetic waves in and out and then repeated, this ebb and flow became the heartbeat of the War’s impact on St. Simons Island.

On Sunday, April 25, we’ll rendezvous at 11:30am at a location near The Avenues Mall in Jacksonville, FL, then we'll begin our convoy to Georgia via I-95. (Depending on interest we may stop in Yulee at Florida Citrus Center (462544 State Road 200, Yulee, FL 32097) to join Fernandina Beach/Amelia Island members, and possibly a third stop at the Mobile on US 17 in Brunswick (743 US-17, Brunswick, GA 31523) to pick up Georgia members who may be interested folks (depending on RSVPs).

After a couple hours of enjoyment, we’ll caravan back to our home destinations. The drive is approximately 95 miles one-way, or 1.5 hours, from our rendezvous point. MBCA Southern Stars Members, Be on the lookout for an “Evite” from MBCA Southern Stars to RSVP! • It's well worth the drive to McPherson to see the annual car show put on by the talented students of the McPherson College Automotive Restoration program - the country's only 4-year college degree in automotive restoration. It's the College Automotive Restoration Students (C.A.R.S.) Show for 2021!

It draws hundreds of cars of all makes, models, and manufacturers. There's bound to be something you like and new things you haven't discovered yet. Car placement begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday (most of us drive down very early Saturday morning) and you can elect to have your car judged in competition or simply put it on display. This will be the 21st annual show, so the sponsor has it down to a science.

Here's an except from the C.A.R.S. website with just a partial list of all the activities:

"This annual event is created and run entirely by the students of the McPherson College C.A.R.S. Club, which is the student-led organization of the Automotive Restoration program open to all students interested in antique and collector cars. Events begin Friday evening with a Cruise-in on Main in downtown McPherson beginning at 6 p.m. There is no registration required for this event and all car enthusiasts are invited to participate. On Saturday, the car show will feature the Model T build team, shop tours, and awards ceremony at the end of the day.

Among the many cars on display and activities throughout the day, the event also showcases feature cars that represent unique and rare vehicles."

The Greater Washington Section of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America is pleased to announce the 2021 Deutsche Marque Concours d'Elegance!

A Washington Metropolitan Area rite of spring, the Deutsche Marque Concours regional event is an ideal opportunity for GWS-MBCA members to join their BMW Car Club of America and Porsche Club of America friends in a celebration of our German marques!

In the Deutsche Marque Concours d'Elegance, vehicles are judged by their condition, appearance, and cleanliness. Competitive Mercedes-Benz vehicles are divided into two classes:

"Concours Street" Class – Judges scoring cars in this class will follow MBCA National Concours Rules in which the Interior, Trunk, Soft Top, Chrome, Rubber, Glass, Lights, Engine Compartment, Exterior Paint, and Body Work (but not the Chassis/Underbody/Exhaust System) are assessed. On the day of the show, these cars will be divided into categories based on actual turnout.

"Concours Popular Vote" Class – Public ballot will determine the “People's Choice” award.

Introduced in 2017, the "Spirit of the Deutsche Marque Concours Award" will be announced and presented as the finale to the Awards Reception. Jointly, the three local Concours Chairs from BMWCCA, PCA, and MBCA will choose one car from their Best of Marque recipients to receive this large and impressive award.

The Deutsche Marque Concours d'Elegance remains free of charge to spectators and the Concours entry fee (online only!) will be $40 per car prior to April 30. Each Concours entry fee includes one Awards Reception ticket. Additional Reception tickets can be purchased online for $16 each.

TO FACILITATE JUDGING (OPENING DOORS/TRUNKS, RAISING TOPS, ETC.),

PLEASE: DO NOT HOLD UP THE JUDGING BY DISAPPEARING.

MASKS MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES.

Please understand that in order to maintain fairness in judging, you must have your car in position on the lot well before judging starts at 10:30 a.m., preferably by 10 a.m. Physical space limitations require that you stay by your car during the judging to move it forward and backward into the parking space so the judges can evaluate it, open doors, trunks, and ask you to raise convertible tops. If your car is selected for an award, the announcement will be made at the Awards Reception. Please be present at the Awards Reception to receive it, otherwise, it must be awarded to the runner-up in attendance at the Reception.

To ensure this event runs smoothly, we invite you to volunteer your time! Volunteer opportunities include setting up our welcome tent area, guiding entrants to parking lot spots, handing out score sheets to registered participants, participating as a Concours Judge, setting up our Awards Reception area, and helping to leave the facilities as we found them.
