  • Winterfahrt (Winter Drive)

    Saturday, 23 January

    8:30am

Mercedes-Benz of Birmingham – Irondale Campus

This is our traditional challenge to ol’ man winter

All Mercedes-Benz vehicles are designed to handle all types of weather.  We have been successfully doing this for 10 years.  This year we will take the scenic challenging routes to Cheaha State Park.  The roads are more challenging and fun than any in North Carolina.

    UPDATE

On Saturday, 23 January at 8:30 am we will meet at Mercedes-Benz of Birmingham to set off on our 12th consecutive challenge to the grip of winter which we have never had to cancel or postpone.

Our route will take us down Alabama 25 (The Copperhead), across Logan Martin Dam and up the serpentine Cheaha Road (unnumbered) through Talladega National Forest.  I count 187 turns in this 14 mile stretch vs. 216 in 12 miles for the famous “Tail of the Dragon” in TN/NC.  I get the same 180-190 turns for that run, so there must be some difference in opinion about what constitutes a turn.

The nice thing about Cheaha in winter is that your sight lines of the road are not obstructed as much by foliage.  The traffic is light, so the drive is exhilarating.

The state park extends from the base of the mountain over the summit.  In the park we begin the “Talladega Scenic Drive” which is built out similar to the Blue Ridge Parkway with multiple vistas of the forest below as it follows the crest of Horseblock Mountain.

We should have multiple places to have our picnic lunch.  Just bring warm clothes or eat in your car.

In case of snow on the mountain, there is an alternate route.

For safety, we recommend picnic lunches.  You should have only members of your household in the car with you.

On the weekend of March 20/21 the Houston section will join our friends from the Lone Star section (Austin) for a tour of the Spoetzl Brewery and Painted Churches. The weekend will include an overnight stay at a nearby hotel and dinner at an award winning steakhouse. All events are in Lavaca County Texas, about an hour and a half drive west from Katy on I-10.

The Spoetzl Brewery, located in Shiner Texas, is the only location that brews Shiner Beer. More than 6 million cases a year. The tour will be led by a Spoetzl Brewery employee that will include a brief history of the facility and an overview of the process, bottling and shipping. The end of the tour will include a stop at the gift shop and opportunity to sample Shiner brews.

The painted churches of Texas are a group of churches near Schulenburg built in the late 1800s by German and Czech immigrants. The immigrants painted their places of worship to remind them of the churches back home. The ceilings and walls inside the churches are painted bright vivid colors with biblical scenes and statues. Their painting techniques give the impression of depth and dimension. The frames around the doors and windows appear to have the intricate detail of wood work carvings but in fact are flat surfaces. Many of the wood columns are painted to look like ancient stone with mortar lines and cracks from withstanding the test of time. But again they are smooth flat surfaces. The high ceilings are painted to give the impression that the building has no roof and you were looking up into the heavens and gazing at the stars on a clear night. It is quite impressive.

These facilities are fully operational churches with a congregation, staff and pastor. Services are held on Sunday and therefore our tour is scheduled for Saturday.

See this link from FOX26 Houston News to get an overview of the Painted Churches. www.fox26houston.com/news/one-tank-trip-painted-churches-of-texas

We just completed The 12th Annual Renaissance Euro-Fest on 10-10-20 in Ridgeland, MS and although we had to reschedule it a week due to weather, it turned out to be great. Perfect weather, proper social guidelines and impressive entries of autos and motorcycles made for a most successful event. We had no Indore gatherings and maintained strict health protocol for the benefit of all. If need be, the same procedure will be followed in Natchez but hopefully we will have left the Covid issue in our rear view mirror!  We will present engraved awards to 18-20 classes, Sponsor's Awards and The Best Of Natchez, both Vintage and Nouveau. In addition, highlights include: presentation of the colors and our National Anthem, a march by the Hub City Highlanders Bagpipe and Drum Corps, strolling Southern Belles for photo ops, a seven plane air show by The Bulldog Formation Flight Team out over the river, just off the bluffs of the lawn at Rosalie Mansion, drive up Red Carpet Awards Presentation and a concluding wrap up party at one of Natchez's great Southern restaurants. A few other aspects are being developed at this time and will be announced when finalized.  In addition to the show, Natchez offers many enjoyable and historical venues. It is one of our Countries original communities, started by the French over 300 years ago. Many Euro Fest participants have taken long weekends or even a week to stay and see all the area has to offer. To get a more complete picture of the Euro Fest and Natchez, please go to our web site, http://www.euro-fest.net, click the Natchez logo, scroll down to videos of the show to see just what we do and how we do it. They prefer that all cars stay the entire duration for pedestrian safety.  You may leave early but they need to know in advance.

If we want to have an MBCA group area,  registration must be completed by April 13th.

Car shows have not been a part of our events and since we have some great cars to show this is an excellent opportunity to show in a well-run show in a great part of DFW.

  • It's well worth the drive to McPherson to see the annual car show put on by the talented students of the McPherson College Automotive Restoration program - the country's only 4-year college degree in automotive restoration. It's the College Automotive Restoration Students (C.A.R.S.) Show for 2021!

It draws hundreds of cars of all makes, models, and manufacturers. There's bound to be something you like and new things you haven't discovered yet. Car placement begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday (most of us drive down very early Saturday morning) and you can elect to have your car judged in competition or simply put it on display. This will be the 21st annual show, so the sponsor has it down to a science.

Here's an except from the C.A.R.S. website with just a partial list of all the activities:

"This annual event is created and run entirely by the students of the McPherson College C.A.R.S. Club, which is the student-led organization of the Automotive Restoration program open to all students interested in antique and collector cars. Events begin Friday evening with a Cruise-in on Main in downtown McPherson beginning at 6 p.m. There is no registration required for this event and all car enthusiasts are invited to participate. On Saturday, the car show will feature the Model T build team, shop tours, and awards ceremony at the end of the day.

Among the many cars on display and activities throughout the day, the event also showcases feature cars that represent unique and rare vehicles."

                   Talladega Gran Prix Raceway

The Alabama North West Florida Section  and Peachtree Section   sponsor the May 15 Performance Driving event.

Talladega Gran Prix Raceway is ideal for novices to learn on.  While the turns are challenging to drive correctly, there is plenty of smooth run off area without barriers, if you make a mistake.

If you have ever considered Performance Driving this is affordable at $250.More advanced drivers will be challenged, and we will provide both classroom and in-car instruction. If you are undecided about this we have a Performance Driving  Experience group.  For $100 you get to attend the classroom sessions for the novice and intermediate student performance drivers.  After the first you ride with the instructor at highway speeds (i.e. 60 MPH on straights, gentle braking, and cornering at about 7/10 of what the car can do).  After the second classroom you drive your car with the instructor beside you in the same manner.  Because you are driving as you would on a public road, you do not need the special technical inspection or a helmet.                  For more information and registration got to www.motorsportsreg.com scroll down to TGPR (Talladega Grand Prix) and MBCA to 15 May.                   Alternatively email me at [email protected]  or 205-529-0071    This is not the oval superspeedway, but rather the 1.4-mile 5 turn road course a bit east of the oval.          About The Track      https://talladegagp.com/about/

  • HEART OF ROUTE 66 AUTO MUSEUM IN SAPULPA TO HOST 2020 GREAT AMERICAN RACERS

Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum will host a lunch stop on the 2020 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Haggerty. The cars will begin arriving at Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum at approximately 12 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2020 and continue at one-minute intervals for more than two full hours.

The Great Race, the world’s premier old car rally, will bring 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles to the Sapulpa museum for the $150,000 event. The race will start June 20 in San Antonio, Texas, and finish June 28 at Greenville, South Carolina.  Sapulpa is the day three lunch stop for the racers.

Cars start – and hopefully finish – one minute apart if all goes according to plan. “The biggest part of the challenge, other than staying on time and following the instructions, is getting an old car to the finish line each day,” organizers say.  At each stop on the Great Race the public and spectators will be able to visit with the participants and to look at the cars.

Only cars built in 1972 or earlier are eligible, with most entries having been manufactured before World War II. In the 2019 Great Race from California to Maine, a 1916 Hudson won the grand prize, a 1932 Ford Cabriolet Hill won second place, and a 1932 Ford Victoria took third and splitting the $150,000 cash prize. The total purse is again $150,000 for 2020.

“When the Great Race pulls into a city it becomes an instant festival,” race director Jeff Stumb said.

  • After a year's hiatus, we’re making tentative plans to join with the local Western Michigan Section and more MBCA members to show our cars on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the 9th Annual Deutsche Marques: a gathering of German cars, owners, and enthusiasts at the Gilmore Auto Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan. Hopefully, new and old friends will converge for an All German Auto Event that will feature everything from daily drivers to weekend treasures on the museum grounds, with unlimited access to one of the nation's most fantastic auto museums.

Chicagoland Section will also be offering MBCA Silver Star Certification for Mercedes-Benz 25 years old or older that are largely original and have been unrestored since new, to provide special recognition to driver-quality cars that have withstood the ravages of time, climate and daily driving, but aren’t “concours queens.”

On Friday, July 9, the evening before the event, we are seeking interested members to join us for dinner in Kalamazoo.  Webster’s Steakhouse is being considered. It is currently closed due to COVID-19, but we are hopeful they will re-open in time for the event.  We are also in the process of setting up a discounted room block at the Radisson Hotel in Kalamazoo, which will also offer indoor parking.  The Gilmore Car Museum is just twenty minutes from I-94 and US-131, located midway between Detroit and Chicago and a short drive from Kalamazoo.

    Saturday, July 24, 2021 starting at 9am

Both sessions will be held at Gulf Coast Auto Shield located at 9442 Summerbell Lane in Houston.

Session #1 should be of interest to anyone who has wondered whether they should be buying premium gas, whether to use regular or synthetic oil in older models, whether the high mileage oils work, which viscosity is best, the effects of ethanol fuels in your engine, is all gasoline alike, and is all anti-freeze alike?

SPEAKER: Mr. Kenneth Stuntz, 2017 MBCA Houston Member of the Year, MBCA Houston Section Board Member / treasurer, and Retired Engineer who dedicated his career to the testing and evaluation of the performance of newly developed fuels, additives, and lubricants. Ken’s 35-year career included designing tests and evaluating the performance of newly developed fuels and lubricants for Chevron, as well as dedicating the last twenty years of his career marketing fuels and petrochemicals for The Ethyl Corporation. Ken holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois as well as a Master of Business Administration from Houston Baptist University and is a career-long member of the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Session #2 will reveal a few tips and secrets to keeping your car looking new for many years. Everyone knows how to wash their own car. However, if done improperly you will cause damage to the finish of your Mercedes.

SPEAKER: Mr. John Gray, owner of Gulf Coast Auto Shield, will walk us through everything from the basics of washing your car the proper way, polishing to remove swirls and other imperfections and finally how to protect the finish of your Mercedes from the harsh environment. We’ll also look at some of the latest technology used to protect the finish of high-quality cars.
