Event Report by Joseph Middleton

2020 has been a year of big adjustments and outright changes. In addition to the health crisis posed by COVID-19, there is also an economic crisis. People have lost their jobs or had their salaries reduced. In turn, they won’t be able to provide for their families as usual this Christmas. This means no gifts for some children. No child should have a sad Christmas. This is where Marine Toys for Tots steps in. This wonderful organization collects and distributes 18 million toys to 7 million children annually to ensure a Merry Christmas.

When the Houston Section had to cancel its annual Holiday Party, it was decided to host another event instead where social distancing could be maintained and a good cause could be supported. That’s why we partnered with Marine Toys for Tots and ALARA garage and hosted our car show on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at ALARA garage. This event would also give us one last opportunity to meet in 2020 (our last prior event was held in June 2020), and it was apparent that our members were itching to meet. Despite the cool weather that provided a few sprinkles, 27 attendees were present in a variety of cars from a 1957 190SL, a host of W123s, and some of the newest models. Dozens of toys were collected from our attendees as well as clients of ALARA garage. ALARA garage owner Ara Malkhassian provided refreshments and guided tours of the facility for five people at a time. Since our last visit to ALARA garage in 2019, the Nicole Longnecker gallery has been added and showcases some of Houston’s most celebrated artists.

As the saying goes, a good time was had by all. The event ended at 1pm, but nobody seemed to want to leave exactly at 1pm. I guess we were starved for a car gathering. Our organization is glad that we were able to host an event during the pandemic to support a worthy cause while taking all necessary precautions to ensure the event was not only safe, but fun. Thanks to Marine Toys for Tots Coordinator Ssgt Eric Quesada, ALARA garage owner Ara Malkhassian, and MBCA Houston Board Member Aubrey Daniels for their assistance in organizing this event, as well as the Mercedes W123 (North America) Facebook group for their help in promoting this event. But perhaps most of all, thank YOU for your donations to Toys for Tots whether it was a toy or a monetary donation. No donation was too small. May you all have a joyful holiday season, and here’s to 2021 being a much better year than 2020. Stay safe.
