New E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet offer the latest generation of driver assistance systems

Enhanced cooperative driver support

– Stuttgart

With the latest generation of driver assistance systems, the new E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet dream cars have a particularly high level of active safety, enabling them to react when the driver does not. The hands-off detection of the new steering wheel works capacitively, which increases the operating comfort during semi-automated driving. The steering wheel rim contains a two-zone sensor mat that detects if the hands are gripping the steering wheel. The driver no longer needs to make a steering movement to signal to the assistance systems that they are in control of the vehicle. If the driver’s hands are not on the steering wheel for a certain period of time, a warning sequence is initiated which, if the driver remains inactive, activates Emergency Stop Assist. In addition, the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet now also help when turning across oncoming lanes and – in addition to conventional parking spaces and garages – can also park automatically on marked surfaces without adjacent vehicles.

The two-door models are equipped with Active Brake Assist as standard, which can help to prevent a collision or reduce its severity in many situations with autonomous braking. The system also can, at typical city speeds, apply the brakes for stationary vehicles and pedestrians crossing the road to help avoid collisions, depending on the situation. As part of the driver assistance package, this is now also possible when turning across the oncoming lane. If there is a risk of collision from oncoming traffic when starting off, the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet can brake autonomously. This Cross-Traffic Braking intervention takes place when a turn indicator is signalled and the vehicle can be braked to a standstill before passing the lane marker.

A range of further “Intelligent Drive” functions are available with the optional Driver Assistance package. These include, for example:

  • Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with route-based speed adjustment: The adaptive cruise control system is able to automatically adjust your set speed for traffic ahead and reduce the vehicle speed in anticipatory mode by referencing map data ahead of curves, junctions, roundabouts, toll booths and exit roads.

  • Active Steering Assist: On highways, at speeds below 37 mph (60 km/h), the vehicle orients itself with the surrounding vehicles and recognizes lane markings. If no lane markings are detected, the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet orient themselves with the vehicle in front.

  • Active Blind Spot Assist with exit warning: With an active, one-sided brake intervention, it can react to vehicles in the blind spot. In addition, Active Blind Spot Assist now also warns of danger acoustically as well as visually in the exterior mirrors of passing road users or cyclists moving at more than 4 mph (7 km/h). The warning is given up to three minutes after the ignition is switched off when the door is opened.

  • Active Parking Assistant with PARKTRONIC and 360° camera: The system makes it easier to find and select a parking space and to park and pull out of a parking space (if the vehicle was parked automatically) in longitudinal and transverse parking spaces or garages. For the first time ever, the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet are now also able to recognize parking space lane markings within a larger parking lot without adjacent parked vehicles. The 360° camera transmits an even more realistic image than before to the multimedia display, including an extended side view. When leaving a parking space, the system can warn of cross traffic behind the vehicle and, in case of doubt, brake.
