“Africa to Hungary” drive

Saturday, 25 July

8:30am

We will gather at Mercedes-Benz of Birmingham’s beautiful Irondale campus at the Grant’s Mill exit from I-459.

We will need to leave by 8:30, to be there by 11am seating. .

We will exit I-59 at Springville for a corniche road up to the brow of Blount Mountain with great views of the valley 600 feet below.

We will pause at the 70-foot-tall Horton Mill Covered Bridge before taking the serpentine road to Palisades Park operated by Oneonta.

We will go a short distance down US 231 before leaving this on a nice county road to Susan Moore (!) Sneed, and then to Boaz and Sardis City.

Lunch will be at Bama Bucks at 11am. We must be there by 11am to be seated, and we need your reservation for you to be included in the group by Wednesday 22 July.

Bama Bucks has a wide selection of moderately priced meals. Nothing on the menu comes from animals in the preserve!

While you can see the exotic animals in the preserve from the restaurant, you can enter a protected area of it from the rear of the restaurant.

After lunch we will continue to the Hungarian Jules Berte winery in nearby Albertville. The Rieslinger Wein is pretty authentic, but the story of how he got to Sand Mountain is even better!

Note: for those starting from Huntsville let me know you are coming, and I will give you directions. Basically, take US 231 to Oneonta to meet the Birmingham group.

August

New Beginnings: MOB, INC Cruise-In

Saturday, 1 August

5:30-9pm

Inverness Office Park

We had 5 cars at this massive cruise-in which features live music and usually a lot of cars. We had a place between the Porsches (7) and BMW’s (also 7).
Many people were interested in Ralph Neely’s 1969 W1113 “Pagoda” SL as well as the grille badges on my 1976 300D Diesel.
The holiday made the crowd smaller. The very warm weather did not help, either.

Mercedes-Benz of Birmingham is a sponsor, so we need to be there to support them.

Performance Driving with Chin Motorsports at Barber

Saturday-Sunday 22-23 August

Barber Motorsports Park

Chin has all levels of Performance Drivers with professional instructors for all levels.
They even have a track touring group at a very reasonable price, and they reserve a Mercedes-Benz paddock area, so we can park together.
Yes, it is hot in August, but Barber is unique in having the large air-conditioned 2nd floor viewing and dining in the tower and even in the spotless restrooms.

This is a very welcoming group that has an incredible safety record.

If you are interested in driving or just hanging out with us, don’t hesitate to contact me at 205-529-0071. Or jertoothsaver@bellsouth.net

I would advise registering early, as Chin usually fills early.

GT World Challenge

Barber Motorsports Park

Saturday-Sunday, 26-27 September

The event hosts several sports car races with the “feature” race being a 3-hour Endura for the fastest GT cars on Sunday.

The promotors have contacted MBCA here in Alabama-NW Florida about reserving a place in the car festival for Mercedes-Benz and AMG cars. They are offering cash prizes up to $1000 for a “people’s choice” type show.

The event runs for 3 days (Fri-Sun) from 25-27 September. Entry is $70 and includes this car festival and paddock access to the race cars.

My race mechanic is with one of the AMG- GT’s and knows most of the teams to give us special access.

The trams from the Indy car race will transport us all the way around the track and to the paddock where the cars are prepared. You really want to view road course races from a variety of vantage points —especially on Friday and Saturday as the drivers are practicing and qualifying.

We will be in the area that is the “fan zone” for the Indy Car races which is the premium viewing area.

More details will follow, so save the dates!
