About this event
The Houston section will take a day trip to Schulenburg Texas to tour the Painted Churches.
The day trip will include a visit to the Shiner Brewery in Shiner Texas.
The Painted Churches tour will include visits to several places of worship that were constructed and “painted” by Germans and Czech immigrants in the late 1800s. The churches are painted to look like worship centers from their home countries. The ceilings and walls inside the churches are painted bright vivid colors with biblical scenes and statues. Their painting techniques give the impression of depth and dimension. The frames around the doors and windows appear to have intricate detail of wood work carvings but in fact are flat surfaces. Many of the wood columns are painted to look like ancient stone with mortar lines and cracks from withstanding the test of time. But again, they are smooth flat surfaces. The high ceilings are painted to give the impression that the building has no roof, and you are looking up into the heavens and gazing at the stars on a clear night. It is quite impressive.
These facilities are fully operational churches with a congregation, staff and pastor. Services are held on Sunday and therefore our tour is scheduled for Saturday.
