About this event
Christmas Drive to Cullman’s ChristKindlmarkt (Christmas Market) via Hanceville and the 13th Century Church of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
Saturday 22 November
In addition to the very intricate bronze doors and gilded alter, it has beautiful inlaid floors and breathtaking German stained-glass windows.
A short drive past villages with names like Bremen and Berlin brings us to Cullman.
The toy capital, Nürnburg initiated the Christkindlmarkt in the 14th century. The red and white striped awnings on the vendors’ booths and the aroma of gingerbread and Gluwein (warm wine laced with cinnamon and thin orange slices pierced with cloves) are firmly etched in my memory.
Cullman’s event is one of only two in the U.S. that features a 10 meter tall “Weinachtspyramide” that turns. Table sized version of these made of wood and driven by the heat given off by candles adorn most German, Austrian, and Swiss homes in the four advent weeks leading up to Christmas. The giant one in Cullman is only erected each year in the third week of November, so we will be visiting it just as it is finished.
After some Gluwein we will stroll down to Cullman’s famous “All Steak” ( they do serve a variety of other dishes) restaurant with its delicious orange rolls.
It’s hard to believe all this is right in your area.
