When trying to read fault codes it's important to recognize that only the engine fault codes are on the OBDII plug near the driver's knee. All other systems report their fault codes via the 38 pin connector in the engine compartment and you need a scanner with a functional 38 pin connector to read.
The aftermarket 38 pin connectors are fragile - make certain you have it aligned correctly or you'll bend pins. I usually have a spare 38 pin connector on the shelf.
