The Baku City Circuit delivered another thrilling, high-stakes chapter in the Formula One World Championship, and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team emerged as the dominant force on the streets of Azerbaijan.
George Russell delivered a brilliant performance from lights out to the chequered flag, securing his eighth career Formula One victory and his third win of the 2026 season. Meanwhile, rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli produced one of the most remarkable comeback drives of the year, slicing through the field from P16 to claim an impressive P5 finish.
Russell Controls the Chaos from Pole
Starting from pole position, Russell launched cleanly into Turn 1, immediately defending his lead and setting the tempo for the afternoon. Baku’s relentless walls and high-speed braking zones demand absolute precision, and Russell remained flawless throughout a demanding grand prix defined by multiple Safety Car interventions.
The initial neutrality came on opening lap after an incident involving Alexander Albon at Turn 1. Additional Safety Car periods followed, repeatedly erasing Russell’s hard-earned leads and testing his composure on cold tyres. Each time the safety car pulled into the pit lane, Russell executed a tactical restart, keeping the chasing pack at bay and maintaining command of the race.
His precise pace management ensured he crossed the line ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, capping off a perfect weekend along the Caspian coast.
Antonelli’s Heroic Charge to the Top Five
While Russell controlled the race from the front, Kimi Antonelli put on an overtaking clinic behind him. Following a disappointing Q1 exit that left him starting P16 on the grid, the young Italian showed tactical maturity well beyond his years.
Navigating through early-lap incidents and capitalizing on alternative strategy calls, Antonelli chipped away at the field. Combining relentless race pace with decisive, brave passes along Baku’s 2.2-kilometer main straight, he steadily surged up the order. By the time the chequered flag flew, Antonelli had gained 11 places to secure a fifth-place finish, contributing a vital haul of points toward the Constructors' Championship standings.
