Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team achieved a historic milestone at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit, with Kimi Antonelli securing his eighth victory of the season and George Russell bringing the sister car home in fifth.
With tyre degradation surprisingly low on the resilient Hard compound, strategic execution under an early Virtual Safety Car (VSC) on lap 14 proved decisive. Antonelli, who started on Mediums, pitted for Hard tyres during the VSC, effectively taking the net lead over McLaren’s Lando Norris before running to the end. Russell, starting on Hards, was forced onto Mediums under the VSC. Unable to stretch the yellow-walled compound to the finish, the team brought him in for a second stop for fresh Hards to attempt a strategy split against Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, ultimately holding his starting P5 position.
The victory marks a landmark moment in motorsport history, securing Mercedes-Benz’s 251st win as a Formula 1 engine manufacturer and drawing them level with Ferrari atop the all-time victory list. The result extends Mercedes-AMG’s lead in the Constructors’ Championship to 145 points over Ferrari, while Antonelli maintains his lead in the Drivers’ Standings, 81 points ahead of teammate Russell in second.
