Best tires for SL 600

Submitted by Case Whittemore on 01-20-2012

I went to Mercedes Benz of Tampa Bay today to get my recently acquired 1998 SL 600 aligned because it was pulling to the right.  The service adviser said the problem is the tires, which are Michelin 225/55ZR16 Pilot Sport A/S 95W.  He said they have had a lot of problems with these tires pulling and alignment doesn't fix it.  He also said my tires were separating.

He recommended changing all tires to Michelin 225/55R16 Pilot HX MXM4 either 95H or 95V.

Does anyone have experience with the old Pilot Sport tires, their replacement Michelin Pilot A/S plus, or the recommended Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 tires?

Independent of these recommendations, what tires do you recommend?

Thanks,

Case

Jonathan,
Thanks for your reply.
I got a set of the Michelin MXM4 tires.  I have driven them only a few miles but they seem great.

He is correct, the A/S's had

He is correct, the A/S's had a Lot of problems, Michelin was/is aware of them and have issued a TSB on the matter.  I'm not a huge AS fan as the multi durometer rubber never wears evenly.  The outside edge of the A/S always wears prematurely ruining what would otherwise be a Fine and Useabley tyre.

The new MXM4 is a great tyre for your SL600.

I only Recommend Michelin, however if budgetary concerns are paramount, I have had good luck w/ some of the higher end Yokohama's...in this case I'd go w/ the S Drive.
