1992 Mercedes Benz 500 SEL (ASR) Malfunction

1992 Mercedes Benz 500 SEL (ASR) Malfunction

Submitted by sisco8130 on 01-21-2012

I have a 1992 500 SEL (W140) with about 102,000 miles.  Recently the car's ASR light has been coming on and it goes into limp mode.  Obviously this can be very dangerous especially on the highway.  I took it a Mercedes Benz shop in the area and they hooked the car up to their diagnostic machine and everything was normal.  When I picked the car up and drove it home from the shop it was driving normal however, today it did the same thing again.  The ASR light came on and the car barely moves.  Once I turn the car off, the light goes out however, I go a short distance and it happens again.  Please advise.  Thanks.

Did they inspect the wiring

Did they inspect the wiring harness's, ie the upper engine harness as well as the harness for the throttle actuator?  If they did not take the time to carefully look @ each of these and verify that they have Both been changed those items will need tending.  The original wiring in 92-95 Mercedes degrades quickly, your 500E included.  This leads to electrical problems, and in some case will actually break control units etc..

What are you are in?  Perhaps a shop that is more familar with the W124 and especially the 500E would worth hunting down.

500E's are a rip, we're prepping a 92 that was hit for dedicated track duty, should be Fun..!

If you have any questions about your 500, please feel free to reach out via phone/email.  I know them well.
