I recently bought my first Benz and love it. I've had a few non crucial things repaired by a very good German car mechanic I've found but I'm not sure about one small problem.  The dashboard lights all work but aren't bright enough at full brightness.  The dimmer knob (rheostat) has a full range of motion and the light intensity  varies as you move it from left to right but the max setting is simply not bright enough.  The only light which appears bright enough on full is the gear selector.  My mechanic suggested there are reflectors in the dash which may not be as reflective as when new.  I was guessing it was the rheostat but as I said, it does seem to work.  Can anyone suggest which is the more likely cause of the problem?

Sounds like the rheostat may be faulty.  The shift indicator light is not fed through the rheostat so it is not dimmed.  Substitute the rheostat with a jumper wire and see if the lights are brighter.  If so, there's your problem.  Hope this helps.
