Compensating Springs

From a knowledgeable reader:

Having restored both 1959 180 and 1960 127 Cabriolets,  I found the articles in the latest issue of "THE STAR"  very well done.  These indeed were remarkable machines!  Though I left the body work to others, I completely overhauled the  drive trains.  There was no compensating spring in the rear axle of these cars, as was stated in the "Check Points"  portion of the article.  The compensation for the lighter, right hand half of the axle was by a higher compression coil spring on the right side.  This is noted as a different part number from that of the left hand spring in "TYPE 220SE CATALOG "B" of 1960.  I believe that the transverse compensating spring was used in the last of the 300SL Roadsters and the Types 111/112's,  and 113's and others from 1960 onward.
