Welcome to the Portland Section! From the Columbia River Gorge to the Oregon Coast, from Central and Southern Oregon, the Willamette Valley to Southwest Washington you’ll find our members making the most of their Mercedes-Benz automobiles. We encourage you to join us at an upcoming event!

President's Message

When I stated that Mercedes-Benz automobiles would be well represented at the Portland Auto Show on the thirtieth, I was unaware (by four days) that Mercedes-Benz of Portland and Wilsonville would not be participating this year. Cleary the
economy has created “adjustments” in all areas of business. While visiting with member Don Bailey who works at the Wilsonville dealership, he commented that of the five economic dips he has participated in, this is by far the worst. With that thought in mind, I’ll suggest we all look at our own position in this downturn. If you are planning on a replacement Mercedes in the near future, you might want to move that purchase up a month or two.

The upcoming New Members Dinner at Saylor’s Old Country Kitchen on S.E. Stark is really for all of our membership. That’s right. I invite all of you to attend and enjoy. Walt Tabrum, the event chairman, would appreciate your call (503-543-2886) so that a reasonable reservation can be placed at the Country Kitchen. As they say on TV, “call now”.

I’m a regular reader of Hemming’s Motor News. In the April 2009 issue a nice report on the ‘56 through ’62 Mercedes 190 revealed their value was steady at around $4,900. Mercedes produced 89,808 gas-powered and 81,939 diesel-powered 190s during that period. In the December 2008 issue, the 300SL roadster was identified at values up to $600,000. No economic problems there.

I’ve been looking for an E-class sedan on the streets of Portland as I travel around. Specifically an E63 AMG. It has 518 horsepower under the hood. It would be nice to say I own one. I’m also looking for an SLS Gullwing. I’ll probably have to wait for a few months to see one of those. Did you see the nice letter to the editor in The Star magazine by our section member John Robinson? It’s on page 16 of the Jan-Feb issue.

All for now, see you next month.
