Introduced in the 1960s, the High Mileage Award celebrates vehicles that embody enduring performance and remarkable journeys — including those surpassing the million-mile mark. The Mercedes-Benz Classic High Mileage Award is presented to owners whose vehicles have logged 155,000 miles or more.

Recipients receive a special grille badge and a certificate of achievement to honor this milestone. The program is offered exclusively within the United States.

Once your application is reviewed and approved, you will receive a confirmation email. Your award will then be shipped by mail. Please allow up to 12 weeks for delivery.

1. Provide a photo or copy of your vehicle title and valid driver’s license.

Oregon State allows cars of any age to be licensed with Special Plates if certain use conditions are met.  The result is a single rear plate that remains valid for the lifetime of your ownership for one fee.  The use requirements are defined in Special Plates Law Sections 805.020, .030, and .035. 

805.020 Special interest vehicles. (1) A vehicle that is a vehicle of special interest may be registered for a permanent registration period as described under ORS 803.400 by doing the following:

      (a) Making application for permanent registration of the vehicle in the manner provided for application for registration of vehicles.

      (b) Paying the fee for permanent registration of vehicles of special interest established under ORS 803.420.

      (2) Once a vehicle is permanently registered as a vehicle of special interest under this section, the vehicle is subject to the limitations on use of the vehicle under ORS 805.030. [1983 c.338 §239; 2003 c.122 §4]

805.030 Violation of registration limits on antique or special interest vehicle; penalty. (1) A person commits the offense of violation of registration limits on antique vehicle or vehicle of special interest if a vehicle is permanently registered under ORS 805.010 or 805.020 and the person uses the vehicle:

      (a) Other than for exhibitions, parades, club activities and similar uses; or

      (b) Primarily for the transportation of persons or property.

      (2) The offense described in this section, violation of registration limits on antique vehicle or vehicle of special interest, is a Class D traffic violation. [1983 c.338 §240]

805.035 Racing activity vehicles. (1) A vehicle that is a racing activity vehicle may be registered only under this section.

      (2) A racing activity vehicle shall be registered for a permanent registration period as described under ORS 803.400. To register a racing activity vehicle the owner shall:

      (a) Apply for permanent registration of the vehicle in the same manner provided for application for registration of vehicles; and

      (b) Pay the fee for permanent registration of racing activity vehicles established under ORS 803.420.

      (3) A racing activity vehicle may be issued special interest registration plates.

      (4) Once a vehicle is permanently registered as a racing activity vehicle under this section, the vehicle is subject to the limitations on use of the vehicle under ORS 805.037. [2007 c.693 §3a]

[NOTE:  A large group tours are not possible due to security/safety concerns.]

• Tours are for groups of 4 to 10 persons only.
• Your arrangements must be made >>2 weeks in advance of the date you would like to tour.
• Include your tour date request, morning or afternoon, and attendees information.
• You must provide names, addresses, and identification for each person (driver's license numbers).
• Tours occur on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday at either 9:00 am or 12 Noon.
• Cameras are not allowed into the facility.
• Wear close toe shoes.
• Be there early to obtain security pass and safety glasses, and high visibility vests.  Hearing protection headphones have radio connections to allow the guide to talk to you in noisy areas to explain activities and answer questions. 
• There is very limited visitor parking––car pooling is recommended.

Many questions were answered/explained during the tour.  Additional questions were fielded after the tour in the "Showroom" section (quiet).  Our particular tour guide was a 23-year employee with a thorough knowledge of the process and facility who was able to answer all questions asked.

There are three primary DTNA products:  Freightliner, Western Star, and Thomas Built buses.

The tour includes a safety briefing, a walk throughout the facility to see where the truck starts as a frame, has axles with brakes (front and rear) and drive shafts added, then put on a trolly that moves the assembly slowly through the of the plant.  If the customer selects an optional color, the chassis will be painted and cured on the way, the drive system installed (engine and transmission with radiator or multiple electric motors), batteries and/or fuel tanks added, the cab is built up with windows installed by robot, dash and instruments installed, steering wheel, seating, sleeper (if equipped) and the cab assembly is mated with the chassis, wires and hoses connected, and the hood installed, tires come next, and finally the fluids station (~5 minutes) adds fuel, oil, gearbox oils, coolant, brake fluid, air conditioner charge, windshield wash fluid, and the key is actually used to start the engine and warm it up.  Once leak checks are complete, the unit is driven outside for full warm up and functional testing of all gauges, controls, and auxiliary features...start to finish in about 4 hours.  Unit undergo further inspections and testing outside one end of the facility.

The tour (like a Modern Marvels episode) is outstanding!!

Although we did not see an electric unit being built, there was a completed eCascadia^® Freighliner that we viewed the batteries, charge ports (2) and the electric drive motors which pointed out how similar the cab was to the diesel-powered version.  We also saw an Australian long-haul unit that was prepared for service in the Outback requiring massive fuel tanks and our guide stated that is could pull up to 9 trailers (legal in Aussie-land) great distances (no wimpy doubles or triples like we see in Oregon).  On of the most interesting chassis was an extreme heavy duty unit that thad 2 drive axels and 4 weight-support axles plus the front steering axel (that's a lot of tires on one rig!)

One last tidbit:  A small German menu restaurant is only a couple of miles away called Prost! at 4237 N Mississippi Ave.  Use your map program to get directions.
