Question:
I have an old W123 and I saw an item listed in an aftermarket parts catalog as a "Fuse Box/Blower Repair Kit" which is described as follows: "If your 16amp ACC blower motor fuse has melted or blown, replace it with this 30amp Mercedes-Benz recommended repair kit!" My car blows that fuse from time to time. Is this a fix, or just a band-aid on the jugular, so to speak?
Answer:
It is a valid upgrade for 124 and 126 models only with the heater blower fuse inside the fuse box. As the blower motors get older, it was observed that the operating current increased to the extent that the 25 amp original equipment fuse was just marginal with all the other current consumers.
MB issued Service Information Letter 54/13 dated March 1987came out with a kit to separate the blower motor circuit to a 30 amp external fuse housed in a separate holder outside the fuse box. The SIL also required replacement of all the 25 amp fuses with newer "solder tip" 25 amp fuses part no 001 545 75 34. This mod was for 124 and 126 models only (but you may use these fuses in any MB in the correct circuit - I.E. - a 25 amp circuit)
I do not recommend back fitting this kit to a 123 model. If your 123 is blowing that fuse, then the blower motor is in need of new brushes or possible replacement. A larger fuse will not solve your problem - and you might create a fire under the dash and that can upset your whole day . . .
