My next door neighbor has two Corvettes --- one for him and one for his wife, even though they are about 60 years old. The other day, I saw him "spritzing" one Vette down with Windex and wiping it off. Not the glass, but the body paint! He said that is what the dealer told him to do. I'd never heard of such a thing before. Have you?

Thanks,
Richard:confused:

I would guess that the modest amount of ammonia in the Windex is stripping the wax. I've heard of using it for bug/tar removal before washing/waxing, but not as a surface treatment.

Well, it seemed to me that the amonia content would be downright harmful to the paint, so I suggested he use what I use --- Eagle One Wet Look Detailer. I got some and tried it on his car. Though it gave a much better look, he had little interest.

While I've been searching for a way to remove some of the coats of wax to get rid of inbedded dirt, It seems to me that amonia is a draconean way to do it. I don't know if his (or my) clear coat is water-based or not, but if it is, I know that amonia will strip water based finishes. Will it damage an automotive clearcoat?

Thanks,
Richard:confused:

Pledge!

When we were motorcyclist; riding the BMW, we were instructed to clean our scooters with "spray "Pledge".
Ofcourse there has to be a good surface treament on the painted surfaces.
The Pledge would remove a small amount of the wax leaving a smooth surface. If no wax, minimal restoration.
This is the way the spray treatment work if you read the tech data printed on the label.
Windex?
I don't use it on the outside of my windows only inside.
For the outside I use the #27 used on the painted and chrome surfaces.
I used #27 on the Windshield of my aircraft as well.

Windex? That's ridiculous. I used to have a neighbor who shined up his Porsche with Pledge. I don't know what detailing school offers this kind of advice, but the teacher ought to be horse-whipped.

Tom:

Well the neighbor got the idea about Windex on his new Corvette paint from the DEALER! Believe me, I tried to talk him out of it and into some of the fine detailing sprays on the market. No avail. But I sure as heck won't do it!

Thanks,
Richard
