This may be common knowledge, but I just recently found out that M-B provided a special pad under the front subframe to use when jacking the car up. It is on the rear cross member section of the subframe (under the steering rack), in the center. It is about 35mm high x 35mm long x 75mm wide and is attached to the crossmember by an expander plug. At the rear I jack under the differential. I put a hockey puck in the saddle of my floor jack to spread the load and prevent slipping. Jack stands can be placed under the rubber pads along the rocker panels.

Vince, thanks for sharing that info. I just got a W210T and was wondering if it is still safe to lift on the rear diff. I guess so per your answer.

On the rocker panels, I have rubber lift pads on the front (only). There are empty holes at the rear, just ahead of the wheel well opening. I am wondering if the rubber lift pads have fallen out.

Thanks.

uberwgn, there should be jack pads in the rear too. They must have been removed. A MB dealer Parts Department can sell you replacements.

Fred, thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. I'll have to check in with the dealer and order up a few different pieces I've discoverd missing around the vehicle.

The rubber pads should be located on the bottom of the rocker panel, directly under the jacking points. The pad is held in by an expander plug. One was missing on my C280 when I bought it. I got one from the dealer.

Yes, that's where I was looking. I see two holes . . I suspect one of them is intended for the rubber lift pad similar to the part installed in the front rocker panel area.

Thanks.

Do you happen to know the part number for the lack pad (plug)? My new (to me) 2003 wagon has all four missing and I am far away from any dealer. If I know the part number, I can probably order a few online.

Thank you in advance.

Re: W210 Jacking points

If I remember correctly, the W211 has different jack pads than the W210. I think they are square with a depression in the center. Seems odd that all four are missing.

Lou, is your car a W210 or W211?

Re: W210 Jacking points

203-997-01-86 - This part is for the W203, W209, W211, W219, and front of the R171. It may also be used on the W210, W220, W215, but, this is not completely clear to me.

171-998-00-50 - This part is only used on the rear of the R171.

221-998-00-50 - This part is for the W221, W251, W164, and W216. The quality of this part is vastly superior to the 203 and 171 parts. If I were replacing all four I would consider using the 221 part from the new S-Class. It is about 1/8-inch less in height so you need to confirm that it is suitable for your application.

Price is about $6 for the 203 and 221 pars and $2 for the 171 part. Just goes to show that price and cost are not always related to each other.

uberwgn:

My 2003 is actaully a W210. I found two part numbers but not sure which one fits:

001 997 95 86
002 997 06 86

I know the first one definitely fits W124 but some say it also fits W210. The second one fits S class but some say it also fits W210.

So I do not know which one will definitely fit my 2003 wagon.

If I cannot find the answer, then I will have to order 4 of each because they are relatively inexpensive.

Thanks, guys.

I think the previous owner intentionally removed them and I can see why. These pads are black and the side skirts are painted to body color on late model W210's. So they might be a little distracting when on.

Thank you fgwinn. I appreciate your response of my question to you on E Bay. I read your ad in the STAR.

I think mine is different. The holes are round so they look like what was on W124 as well. When I get the right plug so I can jack up the car, I will take pictures. Maybe you can manufacture a better plug so people dot have to take them off for better looks. I thought they look just fine when on but people are all different.

Thanks again.

Re: W210 Jacking points

I am about 99% certain that the two part numbers you have are for the jack point on the cross member beneath the engine. I just purchased two of these parts with similar numbers (I don't have the invoice with me now but will check the numers later) to take photos for an article I am writing.

Having said that, these part numbers probably fit the same hole size that is on the frame along the side skirts. So, they may very well work for you. I think you will be much happier with the W221 part 221-998-00-50. Attached photo of the W203 vs W221 part. Notice the white insert (probably Delrin).

Thanks again, fgwinn.

I think 002 997 3286 is the plug for the front cross member.

Thanks for the photo. Now I can see how they go on. That plastic bolt expands the plug, I guess.

I have to measure to see if 221-998-00-50 will fit into my wagon. What I remembered yesterday that there is a mall open area the pad can go in. Outside of that small area, the side skirt (wrapped around) is in the way.

Do you know the dimension (length and width) of 221-998-00-50?

Thanks again. You are the expert of jack pads!

Thanks, Kent, again here, for the confirmation.

This is actually the cheaper of the two.:)

Re: W210 Jacking points

the rectangular parts are for the x-member under the engine. They are not used at the rocker panels locations.

Rocker panels: on my car, the parts are 2-pc plastic assys that are tapped in place with a soft blow hammer. My dealer actually had them in stock. They were cheap.

Do I really need to look up part numbers? I can, if necessary.

One of our cars was missing a few. One or two were damaged on the other car.

I think Kent confirmed it as 001 997 95 86. No need to look up now.

Assorted jack points

I checked my inventory and took a few quick photos of the parts I had kicking around the garage.

Photo #1 is 002 997 32 86 for engine x-member. I got this for my W211.

Photo #2 is 002 997 61 86 for engine x-member. It fits my R171.

Photo #3 is for 002 997 06 86 for frame by side skirts. I got this one for an R230.

Photo #4 is for 221 998 00 50 for frame by side skirts for W221, W216, W164, and W251.

Photo #5 is for 203 997 01 86 for frame by side skirts for W203, W209, W211, and W219.

The parts are very likely used by MB on more than just the chassis I have listed above. All of the parts appear to be made by TRW except the W221 part which is of noticeably better quality. This one appears to have an "AZ" logo on it.

Note that there is a locating pin on the x-member jack points to prevent them from spinning.

The nominal dimensions for the W221 and W203 side skirt jacking points are 62mm wide by 107mm long by 36mm high. The vehicle jack pocket for the W221 part is about 14mm deep and the pocket in the W203 part is about 19mm deep. But since the parts are basically the same dimension on the outside they should be completely interchangeable. I will be interested in seeing which part is used on the new W204 C-Class.

I did not have the 001 997 95 86 part available for a photo.

WOW, fgwinn. Thank for everything.

Photo #3 is the closest to what I got on my 1997 E320.

Are you writing this article for the STAR?

Re: Assorted jack points

That makes sense. 002 997 06 86 was the only part that was in stock at the local MB dealer. It's probably used on a lot MB models. There is no vehicle jack pocket in this part so the cars that it is used in have a separate vehicle jack hole in the side skirt.

I have a 25-may deadline for the STAR article. And of course there's no guarantee that it will be published.

Best of luck.

I wish the STAR had more articles like this. The latest (new) issue was kind of disappointing to me. Not much to read.
