My sunroof opens about three inches and stops. The whole time it sounds like the windows did when they broke. Anyone know the procedure to fix this, I would really apreciate it. I love this car but everything is starting to break down.
Thanks,
Steve in Pa.

Sun roof and other things

I had a theory at one time about sun roofs in automobiles and it goes like this.....the factory puts a hidden counter that records each time the roofs is rolled to and fro.....when the counter reaches it's pre-set limit a small explosive charge goes off, dissabling the device. Like I told my sister many years ago, don't use the sunroof unless you really want to, because, in my experence they are a bear to repair....I worked for 25 years as an import tech (German stuff, mainly) factory trained, Master tech and all that, but sunroofs scare me.

I too have a '99 e320 ......50K........I am so disappointed with this car I don't even know where to begin...Harmonic balancer, A/C, outside temp indicator, CD changer, even the cup holder won't work....unbelieveable for a low mileage auto.

I have, in the past, owned a 300D, a 500SEL and now this one....I don't even want to say it's name.......as soon as I get this piece of junk repaired, I'm selling it and I will never buy another MB product again......Lexus here I come.

I'm sorry if this offends some of the die hard MB fans, but I have had it. In my professional opinion there is no way an expensive automobile should have the harmonic balancer fall off.

I suppose I should have read the do's and don'ts of using this Web site......the part about "rantings" against MB or others....I don't know if pointing out faults in a product is considered ranting or not. Let me put it this way, when I first approached MB about the balancer problem my local dealer told me there was no recall and therefore no problem, this same dealer had three balancers on the shelf in the parts dept. No problem??? Why would a dealer stock three items that should last the life of the product? The recall came much too late, I know Yugos that have the original balancer on them. Anyway, I feel I know what I'm writing about, having bought three new MB products since 1980, and have worked on them professionally 25 years....I'm just disappointed, that's all.

Sunroof - Same problem

I ahve the exact same problem with my 98 E430 sunroof.

It will pop up and down OK, but when I go to open it it gets jammed after about 3 inches.

I'm looking into this problem. I let you know what the solution is. I already have some ideas from other guys at the MB Canadfa website. I'll keep you posted.

I just purchased a 1998 E300 Turbo Diesel with 258K Kms on it. First the A/C doesn't work. After having it fixed by a Benz mechanic, then I noticed the diesel fuel leaking ( a pond of diesel fuel on my garage the next morning). I have this fixed too. Then the same day the fuel leak was fixed, I noticed 2 things:

1. The Sunroof will pop up when I press the switch and it will not come down when I pull the switch. But if I slide the switch to open the sunroof, it will come down and slide open. Now, when I slide the switch to close, it will not move. I had to press the switch to pop up, then it will slide back and close but will continue to pop up. It is just going in cycles. Anyone knows how to fix this?

2. Also, after the mechanic replaces the fuel filter, the fuel pre-heater, the hose fittings, the seals, the gas tank sending unit and the manifold gaskets, I noticed that acceleration is not as responsive as it was before the repair. My other 1999 E300 with 100K Kms has a lot more power and torque than this 1998.

3. Is transmission fluid change recommended on this vehicle with 258K Kms ( 160K miles)? MB says it has lifetime trans fluid. The mechanic says that it is better not to change because the trans may fail with new fluid. Is this true? What is your recommendation?

Thanks
Willy

Return to mechanic - probably related to something they did.

Personally, I'd change it, and get on cycle of changing every 30k miles. Mechanic is full of it (anecdotal evidence, that is, not facts) - new fluid will not cause it to fail, if it fails after fluid change, it was going to fail regardless of fluid change or not, or some idiot screwed up the deal and either introduced some contaminant or overfilled or underfilled the transmission. If this is the same mechanic who did the work in paragraph 2, you may need to find a new mechanic.

1998 E300 DT Trans Fluid Change

Is it possible to change the Trans Fluid & filter ourselves? I can't find the dipstick to check fluid quality, level and to top up fluid.

Re-sync sunroof

You need to re-sync the roof.

Make the sunroof pop up and hold the switch in the "pop up" position for 3 seconds. Everything should work normally after that.

sunroof

I fixed my 98 E320 wagon sunroof twice. The cable keeps snapping. You have to remove the headliner and all trim to get it out. Works now but the up and down works on it's schedule

I believe there is a modified rail for the W210 that keeps the cables from popping out. My experience is that if the sunroof is properly lubed with M-B sunroof paste it will be very reliable. In order to lube it you must actually take out the chrome rails and clean and lube the sliders. It takes me over about two hours to do the job. Most folks (and many dealers) just spray some lube around. That doesn't do anything. This applies to any sunroof, any vintage car. The lack of proper lubrication is the reason so many of the older cars with the motor in the trunk had problems - the roof jambs and the bridge at the rear of the roof panel tears itself loose.

Sunroof fixes

I just ordered new cables as mine were just nasty and kinked, plus new plastic guides/levers, and a new wind fairing, all for about $80 from mercedesbenzparts.com in Miami. Local dealer wanted $80 PER PART. Oy very.
Now, reassembly is going to be the kicker........stay tuned.

I can't seem to access the video - the link is no longer working. A check and reposting would be very much appreciated.

I have a 98 E300 turbo-diesel. About two years ago, I had problems with my sun roof switch. My sun roof acted a bit like yours. The switch can be reset. My recollection of the instruction I was given: 1. With the car not running, turn the ignition switch to the on position (the one with operates the radio and windows); and 2. Press on the back of the switch as if to pop up the back of the sun roof and contiue pressing for ten seconds (I pressed for 15); 3. stop pressing and leave the ignition on for another ten or fifteen seconds. The switch reset and worked fine after that.

This worked! thanks - I don't understand the idea of "synchronizing" the power windows and headrests, etc . . . the manual doesn't indicate that the sunroof needs to be synchronized.

Re: Sunroof problems

I think moisture from the sun roof may get into this switch and the light switch. The first time I drove my car after our last big rain, a drop of water fell from one of these switches onto the console next to the gear shifter. Water is not good for an electrical switch.

Sunroof - W210 - 99 E300 Turbo Diesel

I have read through the multiple sunroof issues / resets and still am unable to fix my issue. First, I assumed my switch was bad so I replace it. Albeit, with a used switch. Since that didn't solve the problem, I replaced it with a 3rd switch (thinking it's not likely, BUT the used replacement switch could have been bad). I'm on my 3rd used switch and I still have the same problems. I have gone through the sync/reset process by holding the button for 3+ seconds (I did hear a click and dimming of the overhead lights), but this has not solved my problem. I hope someone can help me solve my sunroof issue.

This is what my sunroof is doing.. (sunroof closed position): When I push up on the back of the switch to tilt the sunroof, it will tilt up. When I pull down on the back of the switch to close, it will tilt up a 1/2 inch further, then tilt down a 1/2" and stop. If I release the switch and pull down again, the sunroof does nothing (no motor noise, no movement. Totally dead). If I pull the front of the switch back as to open the sunroof, it will open as long as I keep pressure on the switch (auto open and auto close does not work). If I push the back of the switch forward to close the sunroof, it will move forward as if it is going to close. The problem is that it will not stop in the closed position. It will close and without pause will continue and tilt the back open. The only way I'm able to close the sunroof is to time taking off my figure from switch exactly when it is closed. From inside the car, it is nearly impossible to be certain it is completely closed. I must look from outside the car to be certain.

This brings me to two questions: 1) do all 1999 E300 (w210) have the auto open and close sunroofs?  2) Can anyone help me solve this annoying problem?

you're not alone

My sun roof has worked most of the time that I have owned the car (either 6 1/2 or 7 1/2 years), but I have had periodic problems.  When that happens, I press the rear button for about ten seconds and that usually resets it.  A couple of times I have used the door lock or door unlock button on the ignition "key."  If you press the door unlock button long enough it opens the windows and the sun roof.  The door lock button will also close the windows and the sun roof (and also break the left rear window regulator).  Anyway, you are not alone in having problems.  I haven't used the sun roof now for about three months, because it was balky the last time I closed it.  I figure I'll tackle the problem next April or May.  I've never needed the crank that comes with the tool set.

This may not solve some of

This may not solve some of the problems above, but it will if you find the sunroof jamming and the wires popping out of the track.

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=31657

I have had no problems since doing that fix. But then, I seldom use the sunroof. Have two cars with them but don't ever want another one. More trouble that what they are worth!
