As I await closing on the 560SL, my thoughts have turned to the first oil change already! The car has 146,000 miles and has always been in Georgia.

Should I use synthetic oil or the old Castrol 20W-50? I am leaning toward synthetic. But, I could use some recommendations.:o

thanks,

dave

Dave, I would opt for Mobil 1 15W50. That's what I run in our 1991 & 1992 300CE's. Factory fill for that vintage engine was 15W40.

Out here in Southern CA we use 20W50 fossil oil. 3K miles or 3 month intervals. This works for our climate and heavy traffic conditions.

At the risk of perpetuating yet another oil thread war I will tell you what I use without further recommendation.

I use AMSOIL 15W-40, a deisel grade full synthetic oil. My change interval is 6000 miles although AMSOIL recommends 12000.

Car is a 1988 560SL with 106000 miles.

Dave, I change oil every 7,500 miles per the Maintenance Booklet.

Hi, folks....I really appreciate your input!

Now, is synthetic oil a "no-no" for a 560SL with 146k miles?

best regards,

dave

Mileage isn't so much the issue, however, if the car does weep oil, it will weep a bit more as synthetic does Flow better..not just inside your engine, but through what ever additional orifices that have opened up over time.

M1 15/50 is a great oil. If you want to go off the shelf Dino, Valvoline Racing 20/50 is Good. If you want to go boutique, Brad Penn 20/50 is great. I always keep a few cases on the shelf up here in Lilburn if you are interested:)

Dave.....I have a 1986 560 SL with 210,000 miles. Mobil 1 15-50 has been used for nearly 20 years. Prior to that Castrol 20-50w.
