I have the original Becker radio (mexico) in my 1965 190d, but alas it doesn't work anymore - the clock doesn't work either although maybe this is a separate issue. Anyway, just wondering if anyone had any thoughts. Is this something with the radio or with the car/connection? Can I have the radio repaired anywhere - or should I just buy another vintage mercedes radio for the car?

TIA.

Ed Ebell is your man to fix the radio. He has taken over all of the US repair work for Becker.

Re: Radio not working.....?

^^Thank you. I just saw that shop listed in another forum. So I send my radio to them and they work on it? I assume it's not the "connection" then. I saw on their page they can also install a feature to make it ipod friendly (while still having the classic radio in place) which would be great.

I'll contact them. Thanks again.

Re: Radio not working.....?

Friendly Greetings to all...

The Europa radio model is very reliable, once it has been taken care of. I have seen cases where the fuse in the fuse panel makes a very poor connection and the radio is either intermittent or non-operative. Of course, keep in mind that the radio is now over 40 years-old and it probably needs some tender loving care.

Back then, the radios were two piece systems consisting of the main radio body and a seperate power-pack / audio amplifier. These earlier models were quite the inovation since they were the first few years of the fully transistorized models. Keep in mind that the TG (Tube/Transistor Hybrid) was still being produced in early 60's.

The Europa models were clearly the most reliable in the long term since they didn't have complex signal seeking mechanics.

Ed (worked on a few Europas in my day) :)

Just to update, still no go with my Becker radio. I heard that there maybe a place that services them in the D.C./Md area. Does anyone have any leads.

TIA

Have you checked your fuses? They are not located in the fuse box. They are under the hood but under a matchbox sized cover.

Re: Radio not working.....?

Tia,

Please contact me directly @ 201-773-0976. I want to try and understand your problem. I may be able to shed some light upon the possibilities.

I do know that many of the older vehicles had a fuse panel where the fuse appeared good (unbroken) however there was a corrosion that had built up over the years directly at the connection points. There is also a high probability that there may even be a separate fuse someplace else that fed the radio chassis.

Did you send the Europa to Becker AutoSound already?

If it wasn't so far away, I wouldn't mind helping you troubleshoot it. Since we are in Northern New Jersey, that would be a great excuse to drive it to MBUSA Montvale for the June Jamboree (Northern NJ Section Show) and let us take a look. Almost guaranteed to work after that.

Hi Ed,
I'm actually "Jennifer" I just wrote tia at the end for: thanks in advance, sorry for the confusion.

As for the radio: I still need to check the fuses. I live in the D.C. metro area, so I was hoping there was somewhere nearby I could take in instead of shipping it up to NJ. Keep you posted!

Re: Radio not working.....?

Jenn,

I have a very good friend that ran a shop in Rockville, MD. He just moved to FLorida however his shop is still there with one of his tecvhnicians that was there for many years. Maybe you can call him @ 301-881-8637. Tell him Ed from Becker gave you the number and you need his help. He might be abler to get you up and running, otherwise you can always have it removed and sent to me.

And yes Don, I am coming...unfortuinately my 210 is at the body shop right now. A tractor trailer truck ripped my mirror off and it was laying on my hood. I don't think it will be ready in time. I bought my son a 2002 CLK...can always take that or my 1996 S320... ha ha ha .... I've got to stop buying cars...it's turning into a sickness... ha ha ha

I don't think they would appreciate my "plastic car" (my '78 Vette). :)

Ed

Re: Radio not working.....?

One more question: I've been looking at my service manual for my car - but can't seem to locate the proper fuse for the radio? Any tips or hints?

Sorry, I'm at a loss for information on this one, but I do know someone that may know. He seems to have a wealth of information as it relates to specific cars and specific details like this. I'll give him a call tomorrow.

Don, any ideas? Got one of these parked next to your 126 Diesel? ;)

Ed

Re: Radio not working.....?

Well I ended up replacing the fuse and presto! it worked again! : )

Now I just need to decide if I want to upgrade to a fm radio or an ipod compatible radio. For now it's just nice to have some sound in the car though!
