I was also wondering about the trunk lids on the 5.0's. My '78 is Aluminum, but were the 80-81 500 SLC's Aluminum as well? It seems like I come across one that was not. With both of those being Aluminum it does save some weight. It would have been nice if the door skins were and the fenders, but it would have made the cars much more expensive and harder to find the parts. Paul 78 5.0
If an 026 car was ordered without the rear spoiler a steel trunk lid would then be used. There's two reasons for this from what I've heard. One was to get more weight over the rear end to make up for the loss of down force at highway speed while the other was to compensate for the loss of structural enhancement and closing force that the light trunk would have if it lacked the spoiler.
One of Scott's cars, the black 1981 500SLC has an aluminum rear deck lid, but no spoiler? I do see signs of paint work on the car, but no signs of the spoiler being removed. Any thoughts? Oh yeah and that is the last one for sale:). #1576 is going to Norway. Paid 1/2 today and paying the balance when he comes to the states. Sold for $12,500.00 oh well, he was a buyer at least and has a 350SLC daily driver. Family is a collector of old MB's. Going to a good owner. Has a home in Houston and will keep there until the 30 year rule kicks in in 2010. I will still be lurking the forum though.
