I noticed that the grill on my W114 has two screwholes and have seen several of these cars with badges there. What kind of badge goes there?

If you're talking about the radiator grille, then you are looking at the small (about the size of a half-dollar) flat MB badge like the one on the last SLK, but different.

Might be the remains of a euro delivery grill badge. I have one and it sort of rings a bell. Could also be the backing to any number of grill badges.

Radiator grille mesh.

Hi guys! Just a question regarding our W114/115 radiator grille mesh: from what I've seen and known, our cars have those plastic mesh, right? But I also heard about alloy mesh for our models, yes, not the W108/109 ones, but haven't actually seen one.

So,are there really alloy radiator grille mesh for our models? Is it because of a difference in production period: older and later models? Will they fit the same? I'm thinking of getting an alloy one(if indeed there's one!) for my Merc;it'll look very cool  ,much better than my old, plastic one, which is brittle and broken in several places.

Thanks guys! BYE for now and GOD BLESS you folks!!! :) :) :)

The early grilles (1968-1973) I believe have the metal mesh grille. My 1971 has a metal grille.

Gump came with a plastic mesh, and I heard about the metal one from folks with an earlier model. I had to have one, so found one on eBay after much searching. I really like the look of the metal, much better than the plastic, which was looking old and nasty. There are different clips to hold the grill in, so I would suggest getting the complete grill with surround.

Thanks guys, for your replies! Hopefully I could find a nice metal one(a complete grille) for my W114.It just adds on the class on our Mercs, doesn't it? Metal grille, steel rims with the Merc hubcabs, the earlier,smooth-type tailights;ah,these are a few items that made our W114/115s more classical looking, and I just like them! :D

Well,BYE for now and GOD BLESS you folks!!! :) :) :)

Re: Grill badge?

Hi guys! Sorry for bringing up an old topic. Well,I recently got myself a nice, used metal grille mesh.I replaced the old, nasty looking plastic one with it, :D .

Now,I read that there are 2 types of these metal grilles:small holes and big holes. I reckon mine is the 'small-holes' grille,as the 'big-holes' grille has holes the size of its plastic cousin. So,I wonder why is this? Is there a period differentiation even in the earlier models(1968-73)? Or is it to differentiate the W114s and W115s in that period? Any ideas? :D

Thanks again. My old boy is still at the welder's place;welding repairs costs now is pushing approx. US$1100. :D

OK,thanks,BYE for now and GOD BLESS!!! :) :) :)

W.L.

Not sure why the difference in grill apertures. May be related to geography. Hotter climate would want more air flowing in and the smaller grid would be more restrictive (not that much though). Seems to be the grill for very early models of the 68-70 vintage and I love having one on Gump. It will polish up nicely for show and shine events.

Re: Grill badge?

I believe that the grills were redesigned for 1973.

They went from a tall and narrow grill to a short and wide grill. See images below.

1968:

1974 (check out that guys hair!)

My guess is the size of the grill apertures was slightly changed as well.

Re: Grill badge?

That I do! Installed a few years ago and gave it a real polishing when I put it in. Sadly it does not keep shiny, so I have to figure out which product is best to make it shine.

Re: Grill badge?

Hi Clay! Well,it's aluminium alloy after all;no matter how shiny we get them to be by polishing,I don't think they'll retain their shine for long when exposed to the elements. I just leave mine in its original 'dull-silvery' colour.
But still,if you do find a good product to keep its shine, please do share with us, :D !

OK,BYE for now,take care and GOD BLESS!!! :) :) :)
