i have a 2005 diesel e320 cdi; the gps displays a place i visited a week ago, and shows me on streets i am not on and even in the water. satellite radio is fine; b4 i go to mercedes does anyone have any ideas? could the cd be out of date? i tried taking out the cd and putting it back in with no results. if it is too expensive to repair i would opt for a portable gps.

Elizabeth,

If your NAV is showing you in the water, it cannot be because your CD is out of date--unless of course you've had a massive flood. My guess is it could be your satellite antenna needs to be replaced or the NAV software needs to be reset or reinstalled. It is also possible that the entire NAV unit has crashed and needs to be replaced. The first two would not be very costly, but the latter will likely run $2k+. There are some other possibilities, but in any event you will have to take it to your dealer for a real diagnosis and/or repair. Let us know what happened, so others can learn from your experience. Welcome to the Forums and good luck!

The satellite radio is working fine, so does that rule out the antenna needs replacing? Will keep you posted. If it costs 2k, I will get a hand held and than maybe u guys can make recommendations. thanks so much

I think your satellite radio uses a different antenna than your NAV system.

Elizabeth:

I have the same car as you. My nav system went wacko earlier this year after I installed an updated DVD - turns out that the DVD reader in the trunk is a remanufactured unit that MB installed in the 05 model. Some of them did not have certain software upgrades. I agree that you should take it to your dealer (indies usually don't have the equipment to address this issue) and let them take the DVD player out and check to see if they need to reprogram it.

A comment - I use a portable TomTom GPS my 1997 SL (no built in nav systerm back then) and it has more addresses and capabilities than the one in my 2005 E320cdi

WEIRD, but congratulations. I'd still have a dealer tech look at it, though it is difficult to find the problem when no problem exists.

Yes, I'd recommend fixing it. A good MB dealer shouldn't charge to diagnose the problem. Don't let an indy anywhere near your car's electronics.

Elizabeth:

Doubt an indie would be able to diagnose and reprogram. According the shop I use for most everything, the COMAND system is really in the arena of the dealers.

I wouldn't waste $120 on fixing the GPS when for about that you can have a better portable unit. Consider the $120 just the start - you will never get out of there for less than $500 so unless you are prepared to spend that or likely much more forget about the dealer. Save your money for a future repair that you will undoubtedly need to keep the car running.

There's a Tom-Tom that costs around $179 which speaks road names and has a relatively large screen. That costs less than the updated DVDs from mercedes and when it breaks you can replace it with a better one for even less money. That's my $0.02.

Of course if you really love the in-dash unit and money isn't the motivation, then you are on the right path by starting with the dealer...my guess is they will estimate the cost of repairs at $1500. Let us know the outcome.
