Get a FREE subscription to MBUSA's parts catalog (epc.startekinfo.com) and, using your VIN, look it up. I think that subscription will come in handy well after the belt is forgotten.

Hint: Look in the "Engine" group, under Group 13, subgroup 135.

Your engine has three different V-belts, and the one that you're referring to has undergone several revisions and there is also a difference according to engine serial number. If your engine serial number is equal to or less than 912 12 067785, the belt is 9.5mm x 980mm. If your engine serial is greater than 912 12 067785, the belt is 12.5mm x 1030mm.

Sounds like the Napa clerk needed to know your VIN or at least your engine serial number to get the right belt.

Recommend you write down the belt size that fits and keep that info with the car so that next time you'll have it handy. Also, the other belt sizes are 12.5mm x 1145mm for the power steering pump, and either 12.5mm x 1350mm or 12.5mm x 875mm for the AC compressor, again depending on your engine serial number, same cut-off numbers as for the first belt.

I would also urge you to use only Continental brand belts on your car. I have had mixed results with other brands but conti is what M-B supplies in most cases and I have never had an issue with premature failure of one of them.

Do register for the free EPC online. http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/
Probably won't help you at the local parts store though because it's all MBZ part numbers. I've also had good luck with Goodyear and Gates, but other brands like Dayco have been the wrong size.

Thanks all for your great advice! I went ahead and got one ordered from the local Benz dealer. Hopefully it'll be the right one.

I believe the recommendation is that if you replace one belt, you should replace them all unless for some reason you need to replace a relatively new belt.
