I have had my eyes on this beauty of a model for some time now. I am basically an MB diesel guy- with 4 now, plus a 1967 pretty cherry 250 SL. The problem is that nobody fits into the 250 sl anymore. My kids are all big and I can only carry one passenger in the sl. So, I am looking at trading it in for a 1994-95 E320 convert. Plus, I am getting tired of the manual trans .I have seen that prices are now down in the low $20's for that model with moderate miles..
What should I look for when shopping for one(besides full maint. records, of course?). Any major issues with that model/engine/trans?
Back in the day, they were very expensive.
thanks

Air conditioner evaporator and engine wiring harness are 2 that come to mind. Check to see if they have been replaced.

Use the search function above for posts on these and other W124 issues and the M104 engine.

Thanks Rob. I will. I could forego A/C in the convert. How much is a harness replacement, about ?The Star mag has a few nice one for sale. The trade of the 250 sl makes it complicated.

A wiring harness sells for about $650 discounted and $870 MSRP. Many dealers mark up MSRP by 10-20 percent.

There are about 5 Mercedes dealers around the country that discount parts from MSRP. A google search should locate them. Shipping should be about $10.

Can your dealer sell the part to you for this price? Yes. Will he? Don't know until you ask.

Jeff, be sure to have a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) done by a MB-trained tech before agreeing on any purchase. That way you'll know what you're buying. Also, a complete set of service records helps to determine how well any car was maintained and reveals the history on major repairs.
