Three questions: (1) if buy a new top is there a recommended source re: a fair price? Note: this is not a restore or a show car - driven on weekends for fun. (2) if buy a top / kit do they come complete or must you order all the added pieces and parts separately, e.g., seals, required glue if needed, etc., and (3) never install a convertible top - is this something a couple of friends and I can handle or are we just getting in way over our heads re: complexity and special tools? Thanks Bob

Hate to send you to another forum, but for about all you'd need to know about installing a top on a 107:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c107-sl-slc-class/1444973-r107-soft-top-replacement.html

A lot to read and look at, but it should explain just about anything you want to know.

Alan

Re: 1983 380SL Convertible Top

I installed a new top on my 1980 280SL (107) several years ago. I took my time and read over several times the directions from a friend who had done it - plus I have a video from MBUSA that shows how it is done that is available to MBCA members. I can email these directions to you if you want.

ONE THING: make sure you use the MB brand top adhesive - not contact cement. Contact cement sticks permanently and stains the interior lining so job looks like *#*#*#*#. The MB brand ALLOWS REMOVAL AND REPOSITIONING OF THE TOP WHICH YOU WILL BE DOING TO GET IT RIGHT. The 20-year-old top on my SL came off easily because it was installed with MB adhesive at the factory.

An authentic MB top has the tan pattern on the inside, not canvass, so be careful where you buy it. Contact me off line for a price.
