Event Report
The Long Beach - South Bay Section visited The Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California on February 11th. The museum is a homage to the art deco and the machine age, eras that produced exquisite art and magnificent automobiles. The Museum is home to examples of the finest historic French automobiles from the Bugatti to the Voisin as well as significant decorative art from the same period.
Many of the cars on display have won prestigious awards at Concours d'Elegance throughout the world and there are also famous French racing cars--many of them past winners of historic races such as the Grand Prix de Pau and Le Mans. The visit was a trip to the Paris Auto Salons of the 1930's, and we shared with the brilliant pioneers of these engineering marvels the romance and fascination that were at the core of the burgeoning auto industry of the time.
Designers and coachbuilders, using their creative genius, brought the artistry of Lalique crystal and Louis Vuitton leather travel bags into their machines. Also on display was a selection of cars from the Schlumpf Reserve Collection that were purchased and allowed to stay in their original state without any restoration whatsoever. One example of this is a 1925 Bugatti Type 22 Brescia Roadster that spent 75 years at a depth of 173 feet in a freshwater lake in Northern Italy, with the side buried in the mud in much better shape than the side exposed to the water.
After the wonderful tour given by the Curator of the Museum (our members said it was the best museum tour they have ever been on), the Section moved on for lunch at BJ's Bar and Restaurant in Oxnard. The group truly enjoyed the entire experience, and if you are ever in the Southern California area, we urge you to pay them a visit! See their website at http://www.mullinautomotivemuseum.com/
