Event Report
On of the benefits of being a Mercedes Club member is that you meet other enthusiasts and discover there are classic Mercedes gems right in your own back yard. That's what happened to members of the Texas Hill Country Section. Originating from the former Alamo Section in 2011, we discovered section member Gregory Haag and his 1951 220 A Cabriolet.
Greg who lives South east of San Antonio in La Vernia, Texas (population 931), has his gem dismantled in three locations while it is being restored in the middle of no where. So, you can imagine how eager we were when Greg invited members out to see his gem on January 28, 2012. We started where the car's interior is being worked on.
At Best Upholstery, Manual displayed cream-colored seats, the dash board and glove box in various stages of work. Most of the interior had to be re-built from scratch. We then drove to visit with Stan who is working on the frame. Members were able to check out the frame while Stan answered questions.
After lunch at the Bluebonnet Cafe, we drove to Greg's garage where the upper body and body panels are in stages of being painted, chrome being re-plated, and instrument parts had to be repaired or purchased from older Mercedes vehicles.
As we drove through La Vernia looking at the horses and cactus (and getting quite a few stares from locals), we got a chance to see a gem. We thank Greg for giving us the opportunity to see such an amazing vehicle. We were promised another look once it's finished!
