Event Report
Our 20-car convoy made its way on scenic, mostly twisty and hilly roads through the North Texas Hill Country en route to Clifton, the Norwegian Capital of Texas. We enjoyed lunch at Johnny's Place, a local hangout which served a hearty Chicken-Fried Steak plus other country cooking selections. The staff was terrific, and the price was certainly right.
After lunch, we visited the Clifton Classic Chassis, a private museum which houses 25 restored and original classic automobiles. Dr. Terry Watson of Clifton and Dallas, owner of the museum, served as our tour director, and explained to us the unique features and history of each car, and how he found and came to own them. The cars on display included a '60 Corvette Convertible, a '40 Buick Eight Sedan, a '55 Thunderbird Convertible, and several classic Cadillacs, Pontiacs, and Lincolns from the Fifties and the Sixties.
After our visit to the car museum, we proceeded to the Bosque Museum to see historic and prehistoric exhibits of Indian, Norwegian, Civil War, and other artifacts which trace the history of Bosque County. Dr. George Larson, museum director, gave us a superb guided tour of the museum. The highlight of the tour was a replica of the Paleo-American site found in Bosque County, known as the Horn Shelter. The exhibit portrays the burial of a man and small girl as it took place 11,200 years ago. Dr. Larson explained that it is suspected that the so-called Horn Shelter Man does not fit any of the known human ethnic groups in existence today, nor at that time. Tests are being conducted by the Smithsonian to prove or disprove this theory.
After our Bosque Museum tour, we visited Clifton's revitalized Downtown for some antique shopping, or to chill at the local coffee shop, before heading home. We concluded that there is much more to Clifton than can be seen in one day. We will make plans to visit this quaint city again soon.
