Event Report
On December 4 (naturally a First Sunday!) the destination of the Sacramento gang was a Gold Rush town off the beaten Hwy 49 tourist path. When I initially went there - to plan the route - dusk was coming. I strolled into the Washington Hotel and at the bar saw the bartender playing cards with some of the locals.
The locals looked like they had just come in from a day at the diggings along the Yuba River, and if Rod Serling had been with me I know he would have been furiously taking notes for a new Twilight Zone episode!
Hardly anyone today has heard of the town of Washington, CA, but 150 years ago it was thriving and rivaled nearby Nevada City.
There is one way in and one way out – Washington Road, which in 5 short miles descends 2,000 feet. Along the way, we stopped at Bridgeport which 150 years ago was also thriving. It has either the longest wooden covered bridge in the state - or country. Can't remember.
But in the 1850s for awhile, teamsters coming from the silver mines of Nevada's Virginia City gladly paid the $6 toll to avoid many extra days of travel. This was the main route from Virginia City NV to Marysville CA.
One of our members decided to bring his Porsche instead of the Mercedes, so I decided to call this the “Stuttgart Event” – cars from any Stuttgart suburb - Unterturkheim or Zuffenhausen - were welcomed!
At the Washington I was told that there are 4-5 resident friendly ghosts upstairs in the hotel rooms, but I could see none.
I wondered if I scared them away.
As lunch ended some of the members decided to go to Nevada City – 20 miles away…
