Event Report

At the December 3 Saturday Breakfast Meeting of the Kansas City Section, our guest speaker was Sgt. Jay Atkinson from the Kansas City Mo. Police Department.  Since joining the KCPD in 1983, Sgt. Atkinson has gained years of valuable experience and insight.  He brought along several tips for safe winter driving to share with us.

One of piece of advice - in case of an accident, if your vehicle is driveable - move it off the road.  Referring to this as “Steer It – Clear It”, he said it’s often more dangerous when the vehicle stays on the highway while waiting for law enforcement to arrive.  When left on the highway, there is a much greater chance of your car (and you) being struck by another passing vehicle.

Other advice included always asking for and exchanging insurance and drivers license information.  Also, if stopped by a patrolman, have your drivers license, registration and insurance card ready to present – don’t make the officer wait outside your window while traffic continues to zoom by.  Consider the officer’s safety.

Lastly, although traffic accidents are down overall, he mentioned a growing problem of texting while driving.  While predominantly among younger drivers, this distraction causes hundreds of needless accidents and deaths annually.

Thank you, Sgt. Atkinson, for sharing your knowledge with our group.

As a side note – AT&T recently developed a video documentary titled, ‘The Last Text’, that deals with this subject.  Recorded with the help of the Missouri Highway Patrol, I think it’s worthy to post the link here.  If you have any young drivers, I urge you to have them view it also.
