2004 Holiday Dinner

The Central Ohio Section held their Holiday Party December 10th at the Marriott Airport Hotel. We had a very nice turnout and the food was great and plentiful. The cost of the dinner was lowered by the nice donation from Crown Eurocars. Door prizes were also donated by Crown Eurocars.

We had several new members attend. Joe Alexander and Dale Beavers showed some photos and film from their "Classic Adelaide Rally" in Australia. More information about the USA members that went to this Rally is in the Jan/Feb issue of The Star. Our regional Director, Frank Cozza and his wife Mary Alice attended the party.

The highlight of every Holiday Party is always the "Member of the Year” award. The 2004 Member of the Year was awarded to Robert Fellows. Bob has been an active member, and also holds the longest continuing membership, since 1972. He has a beautiful original 280SL. Mary Alexander, Section President, made the arrangements resulting in a very good dinner party. Many thanks to Crown Eurocars for helping us host such a nice event.

2004 Auto Cross

On July 18th the Central Ohio Section of the MBCA co-hosted an auto cross event at a large parking lot on the campus of The Ohio State University. Our co-host, for the second consecutive year, was the local Alpha Romeo club. Members of the two clubs were able to compete with any car they owned, so there was an interesting collection of vehicles in the makeshift paddock. Samples include: Alfa Guilia Super T1, Alfa Spider, Honda Civic, Mercedes 190E 2.6 Sportline, Mercedes 250SL, Mercedes 560SL, Mercedes E420, Oldsmobile Alero, Porsche 911, and a VW Golf GTI.

Three practice runs and three timed runs were given to each participant, with additional fun laps allowed after the winners were announced. This gave everyone ample opportunity to have fun scrubbing cones.

The fastest run of the day was 65.61 seconds by Joe Alexander in his Mercedes SLK32 AMG. The second was 68.20 seconds by Gregory Bond in his Alfa Romeo GTV 6. Third place was 69.62 seconds by Mike Groeniger in his Subaru WRX. Twenty two competitors took a shot at the long track, with times ranging from the winning 65.61 seconds to a first timer running 87.06 seconds in a European W124 chassis 200D.

Thank you, Joe and Mary Alexander, for acquiring new timing equipment for the Central Ohio Section. It worked great and it ensures many more enjoyable timed competitions in the future. Thanks are also in order for Joe Alexander, Bill Hoza, and Rodd Masteller for site setup and tear down.

2004 All German Car Show - Click Here for pictures

On August 22nd the Central Ohio Section hosted the 3rd Annual All German Car Show at the Clarion Hotel in Dublin, OH. The show was sponsored by Crown Eurocars and all proceeds and donations went to Pilot Dogs (www.pilotdogs.org), a local organization that trains enabling dogs to aid the blind.

This year saw the third consecutive year of grown for the show. Seventy two cars participated, where as 60 had the year before and only 45 in the inaugural year. The Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen brands had the greatest participation, but several Audis, BMWs, Merkurs, and an Opel GT were on hand as well. There were some very unusual and interesting vehicles on hand. These included a Porsche 917 fiberglass race car, a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, a pair of Mercedes-Benz Unimogs, a 1960’s era Volkswagen 1500 large coupe, a nearly 100% factory original 1969 Opel GT 1.1 liter, and more.

The Clean Car Contest was held as usual, and first through third place trophies were given out in each marquee. This allows us to reward numerous owners who worked so hard on their vehicles. We also awarded a People’s Choice award. Every car in the show was eligible for this and the show spectators and participants could all vote. The 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL won People’s Choice.

New this year was trophies in place of ribbons, the on-site concession stand, and a professional photographer. We look forward to a bigger and better show on August 21st, 2005 featuring a vendor’s area, more German-centric food at the concession stand, and live German pub music as new features.

Special thanks go out to event chairman Rodd Masteller, along with Mary Alexander, Joe Alexander, Jo Smith, and Joe Buhac for organizing the event, running errands, setting up the facility, running the show, and helping tear down afterwards.
